Western Illinois University Named Best Midwestern University by U.S.News & World Report
MACOMB/Moline, IL — Western Illinois University has been recognized as a “Best Midwestern University” by U.S.News and World Report.
In the U.S.News and World Report 2023 rankings, Western is ranked 39th of 166 public and private colleges and universities on the “Best Regional Universities (Midwest)” list and is one of just two Illinois public institutions in the top 50 of the Best Midwestern list.
Along with the “Best Midwestern” recognition, Western has been acknowledged by U.S.News as a “Top Public School” (Midwest – #9), “Best for Veterans School” (Midwest – #17), Best Value School” (Midwest – #51) and “Top Performer on Social Mobility” (Midwest – #38). Western is also recognized in rankings for campus ethnic diversity, economic diversity, freshman retention rates, undergraduate business programs, undergraduate engineering program, least debt and highest proportion of classes under 20 students.

The institutions appearing on the U.S.News Best Colleges ranking represent a full range of undergraduate majors and master’s programs. The rankings are based on several diverse measures: graduation and retention rates, social mobility, faculty resources, expert opinion, financial resources, student excellence and alumni giving.
