Metal Music Gets A Heart With Benefit Concert
Eardrum-splitting, headbanging metal music isn’t usually considered the soundtrack to kindness and altruism, but a cadre of axe shredders are getting together once more for a caring cause at the Headbangers for Hayden Concert from noon to midnight Sept. 30 at Rose Bowl, 1411 Grandview Ave, Muscatine.
Hayden Daufeldt, son of Cory and Kendra Daufeldt, was diagnosed with Pineoblastoma, a rare brain cancer, in November 2014. He passed away at age 4 on August 6.
In February 2015, a group of musicians held the first concert to help the little boy and his parents.
“It was a terrible thing, we were just trying to help out any way we could,” said Justin Yant, a cousin of Hayden’s father, who helped organize the event. “It was awful when he passed away. We were already planning this second event to help his family out and we weren’t sure what we were going to do, but we decided to hold it as a benefit to help other families and kids in the same spot as Hayden. It’s a terrible thing that happened, but I’m hoping we’re doing something that people can benefit from.”
The group is hoping to make this an annual fundraising event to financially support families in the Muscatine area battling childhood cancer, Yant said.
“Anything we can do to help, hopefully we can raise a lot of money and help out a lot of people, that would be great,” he said.
The band lineup includes a roster of talent local and regional, featuring CornFed Bruiser, Dogs Of Neptune from Des Moines, The Rumours from Waterloo. Far From Fearless from Southeast Iowa, HeavyWeight, RM-212 and Old Man’s Curse.
“We’re pretty stoked about this lineup and we hope people get fired up for it as well!” Yant said. “It’s awesome, we’ve had bands telling us they want to be included, volunteers signing up, people donating, it’s been a great thing.”
Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for those ages 11-20 and free for kids 10-and-under. There will be merchandise and food for sale, with proceeds going to the cause.
“It’s a great cause, great people, great bands and it’s just a measly $15 of your hard earned coin,” Yant said. “We’re hoping to get a lot of people out, we really hope to do a lot of good with this.”
