Libraries Rock The Summer!
There is still time to have a rocking summer at the Rock Island Libraries!
Libraries Rock Summer Reading programs, courtesy of the Rock Island Libraries, are in full swing and are helping students realize reading rocks! Don’t miss out on this awesome summer reading program!
Free and open to all ages, these four weekly programs are offered on Monday and Tuesday afternoons from Jun 4 – Jul 10 at the Downtown Library (401 19th Street Rock Island):
Carle’s Creators art program is for grades K-3 and provides hands-on art projects inspired by the children’s picture book illustrators they already love, including Eric Carle, I-spy, and Dr. Seuss. Carle’s Creators is offered on Mondays from 1:30 – 2:30 pm.
STEAM-AZING Kids is for grades K-6 and provides hands on learning in science, technology, engineering, art and math on Mondays, from 3 – 4 pm. Projects range from an Absolute Science presentation to Figge Presents art projects, and a Dissection Lab for Tweens to 4th of July science and building a marble run course.
Picasso Rocks Art Club is for kids going into 3rd through 8th grades and is offered from 2:00 to 3:00 pm on Tuesdays. Art instructor Gloria Burlingame discusses the many styles of Pablo Picasso’s guitar paintings, and then helps kids rock their art skills in watercolors, oil pastels, and colored pencils. Summer art is made possible by a the Geifman Memorial for art and drama of the Rock Island Public Library Foundation.
Math Rocks Summer Math Club is for children in grades 2nd and up, and is offered from 3:15 pm to 4:15 pm, also on Tuesdays. Math tutor Elizabeth Russell offers fun, hands-on projects that combine stories and math, because math really does rock when you know how it works. Projects include Cheese-it Graphics, Platonic Solids, Mathical Notes, Baseball Math, Mancala, and more.

Don’t forget about the Rocking Summer Reading Challenges! Students will be challenged to reach a certain reading goal over the summer and will be rewarded with prizes and drawings. Challenges are available for kids, ages birth to 6th grade (reading aloud to your child counts), teens ages 12 – 18 and adults ages 19 and up.
