Four Artists Unveil New Works At Augie
The Augustana Teaching Museum of Art presents “4 Artists, 4 Visions,” an invitational exhibition organized in conjunction with the Augustana Department of Art. While previous exhibitions this year have situated the arts in dialogue with other disciplines or contemporary issues, this exhibition provides an opportunity to engage with the visual arts as a cohesive and varied practice, for its own sake. The invited artists are masters of their medium, and were chosen to provide an opportunity for art students to gain a greater sense of varieties of praxis in the art world.
The four artists of “4 Artists, 4 Visions” are Oscar Jay Gillespie, professor of art at Bradley University in Peoria; Claire Hedden, curator of the McLean County Arts Center; Tom Lundberg, professor of art at Colorado State University; and Joseph Patrick, professor emeritus in painting and drawing at the University of Iowa.
Gillespie teaches printmaking and drawing and is noted for expertise in monotypes and intaglio—especially metal-plate engraving. His work is in numerous public collections and he has a long history of artist residencies, including Oxbow, Frogman’s Print Workshops and Carleton College. He will give a talk in the Centennial Hall galleries on March 13 at 7 p.m.
Hedden holds an MFA in ceramics from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, New York. She has exhibited her work across the United States, including the Lohin-Geduld Gallery in New York City and The Clay Studio in Philadelphia. Her artist talk will be on April 7 at 7 p.m.
Lundberg coordinates graduate and undergraduate programs in fibers and teaches courses in weaving and surface design. According to fiber artist Rowen Schussheim-Anderson, chair of the art department at Augustana, the rich surfaces of Lundberg’s beautiful, small-scale works “are surprisingly dimensional, considering they are stitched with a needle and a thread!”. His artist talk will be on March 27 at 7 p.m.
Patrick has had more than 50 solo exhibitions. He has received numerous portrait commissions, and is represented by the Olson-Larsen Galleries in Des Moines and Hudson River Gallery in Iowa City.
A free opening reception will be held on March 10 from 5-7 p.m. in the Centennial Hall galleries.
Special thanks go to Augustana art department faculty members Kelvin Mason, Rowen Schussheim-Anderson, Megan Quinn and Peter Xiao, for their efforts in making this exhibition and programming a success.
The museum is open noon to 4 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from September 2016–May 2017, or by appointment by calling 309-794-7400. For more information and details on the artist talk events, visit www.augustana.edu/arts/art-museum
