Illinois Congresswoman Bustos Secures Wins in Homeland Security Appropriations Markup
Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17), a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, helped advance out of Committee a comprehensive homeland security funding bill that would invest in smart, effective border security, meet humanitarian needs of migrants and support programs proven to keep Americans safe.
“Ensuring Americans are safe here at home is critically important,” said Congresswoman Bustos. “This year, I was proud to help advance a Homeland Security appropriations bill that will bring resources to our emergency warning systems, support our nation’s firefighters and make smart investments in border security.”
Congresswoman Bustos secured the following priorities to keep communities safe:
- $40 million for the Next Generation Warning System: This bill includes $40 million for the Next Generation Warning System, which sends texts and alerts of emergency situations through public radio stations’ infrastructure.
- $370 million for Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grants: This bill includes $370 million for the SAFER grant program, which provides resources to hire, recruit and retain firefighters.
- $370 million for Assistance for Firefighter (AFG) Grants: This bill includes $370 million for the AFG program, which provides resources and equipment to career and volunteer fire departments.
Additional Bustos priorities included were:
- Smart and effective investments in border security.
- Security for our critical infrastructure with dramatically increased funding to prevent cyber-attacks and defend against cyber intrusions.
- Investments in maritime security through funding for the Coast Guard.
- A new pay system for TSA to ensure personnel are paid salaries equivalent to other federal workers.
- Funding to improve migrant processing, respecting the dignity of immigrants.
