WQPT Kids Writers Contest Winners Selected

WQPT Kids Writers Contest Winners SelectedWQPT received hundreds of stories from students in kindergarten through third grade for the annual PBS KIDS Writers Contest. Sixteen winners (four from each grade) were selected by educators and contest sponsors. The winners and their families will be honored and awarded prizes at Deere-Wiman House at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 21.

“We are thrilled that so many teachers and parents encouraged their young authors and illustrators to participate in the contest again this year,” said Michael Carton, Director of Education and Outreach for WQPT.  “The judges had a hard time choosing winners because we had so many amazing entries.”

 

KINDERGARTEN

First Place: “Friends Together” by Zander Rowland, Rock Island, IL

Second Place: “Just the Rose in the Valley” by Ibraheem Baig, Bettendorf, IA

Third Place: “Frog, Toad, and Snail Think of a Lullaby” by Bethany Priaulx, Bettendorf, IA

Honorable Mention: “Animals in Space” by Olivia Boehle, Moline, IL

 

FIRST GRADE

First Place: “I Help My Dad” by Lilly Daily, Davenport, IA

Second Place: “PB and Jerry Get a Pet” by Calla Kean, Rock Island, IL

Third Place: “Camping With Dad” by Jackson Peters, Davenport, IA

Honorable Mention: “Lilly and Layla and Broken Trampoline” by Meadow Dale, Davenport, IA

 

SECOND GRADE

First Place: “Jinx and Hex’s Backyard Adventure” by Willa Halfhill, Bettendorf, IA

Second Place: “Weird Newspapers” by Lachlan Gleason, Bettendorf, IA

Third Place: “Green Tea” by Katelyn Le, Davenport, IA

Honorable Mention: “The Fun Trampoline Park Day” by Abby Agan, Davenport, IA

 

THIRD GRADE

First Place: “The Butterfly Who Started the Grand Staff” by Shalini Chandupatla, Bettendorf, IA

Second Place: “A Guide to Magic Land” by Lily Travis, Muscatine, IA

Third Place: “Book Snail” by Riley Shosh, Davenport, IA

Honorable Mention: “What if Food Had A Personality” Audree Yanke, Eldridge, IA

 

All the entries (along with a certificate from PBS) will be available for pick-up at WQPT after the May 21 award ceremony.
