Western Illinois University Students Set GPA Records In Spring Semester

Leatherneck student-athletes had another successful semester in the classroom this spring, as they posted a grade point average (GPA) of 3.18 as a department in the spring 2024 semester.

Ten of WIU’s 17 varsity teams earned a 3.0 GPA or higher, and 45 student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0 GPA. Additionally, two-thirds (224) of the Leatherneck student-athlete population earned a 3.0 GPA or better, while nearly 40 percent of Leatherneck student-athletes finished the spring semester with a 3.6 GPA or higher.

“I am very proud of the hard work our student-athletes continue to put in in the classroom,” said Director of Athletics Paul A. Bubb. “Their dedication to academics on top of their athletic achievements is notable, and it speaks to the tremendous support and mentorship provided by our academics and compliance staffs, as well as the commitment each of our coaches have to ensuring WIU student-athletes complete their degrees as a part of their time in the purple and gold.”

In team GPAs, the women’s basketball and women’s golf teams both broke records in the classroom this spring, beating their respective programs’ highest GPA record. Head Coach JD Gravina’s women’s basketball team led all women’s teams with a GPA of 3.88, while Men’s Soccer Head Coach Eric Johnson’s team led the men’s side with a 3.37.

Western Illinois Athletics remains committed to supporting the holistic experience of its student-athletes by helping them achieve excellence in competitions and in the classroom. This academic year, the department implemented additional resources and student-specific academic support by establishing supervised study tables in partnership with campus offices and support. The efforts proved successful for student-athletes as the department continued its strong academic momentum from the Fall 2023 semester when the department earned the highest departmental GPA since the department began tracking cumulative GPAs.
