Summer camps bring crowds of students to Western Illinois
This summer, Western Illinois University is welcoming a record number of students for a variety of week-long camps hosted by the WIU Office of Study Abroad and Outreach (SAO).
The booked, week-long adventure began on June 10, with 19 students attending the Art: Colorful Minds and Creative Hands program for grades 4-8.
The Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Experience for grades 10-12 kicked off June 16, with campers coming from as far as Baltimore, MD. The event featured a visit from a K-9 trooper, a polygraph demonstration and education on various law enforcement topics.
The high school version of the Art: Colorful Minds and Creative Hands program opens Monday, June 23 and a STEM Camp for high school students begins Monday, July 7.
This year, campers over the age of 16 have access to portions of the Donald S. Spencer Student Recreation Center during their time at these overnight camps.
“We are thrilled to have students from all across the country attend these camps to not only learn from our great instructors but also experience the WIU campus,” Interim Provost and Academic Vice President Mark Mossman said.
SAO is working with Summer of a Lifetime and Wahawk Summer Up!, two Chicago-based school programs that help students find and attend summer camps around the region. Their goal is to bring students from the Chicago area to university campuses and prepare them for experiences for life inside and outside the classroom.
