Western Illinois University Social Work Students Attend NASW
On April 16, students and faculty from the Social Work program at Western Illinois University proudly attended the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Advocacy Day held at the Illinois Capitol in Springfield, IL.
A total of twelve students, accompanied by two professors, represented WIU at this event. Among them, three students were named Lobby Leaders, guiding various groups across the capitol to engage in discussions with legislators on critical social issues.
“I think having this opportunity for students, even if this was their first time stepping foot in the Capitol, was very Impactful. To know that you are advocating for bills that not only affect social work students but also social work professionals and their clients is an empowering feeling. Knowing that your words could have an impact on how senators and representatives vote on a bill shows just how important advocating is. I learned a lot while we were at the capitol. It might have been my first time there but it will not be my last. Our voices matter,” Social Work Student ToniSue Chatfield said.
The successful coordination and organization of WIU’s participation was led by Chatfield, the NASW Student Liaison for WIU. Additionally, Professor Perone and Professor Peterman were in attendance.
Through their participation in NASW Advocacy Day, WIU’s Social Work program continues its program mission of preparing compassionate and skilled social workers who are equipped to address the complex challenges facing society.
