Illinois Congresswoman Bustos Votes to Pass Bipartisan Legislation to Better Direct Federal Aid to Communities with Persistent Poverty
Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) voted to pass the bipartisan Targeting Resources to Communities in Need Act of 2022 to better direct federal funding toward communities with high levels of persistent poverty.
This legislation would help bring more resources to communities in Northwest and Central Illinois where more than 20 percent of households are in poverty. In Illinois’ 17th Congressional District, this would include communities in Peoria, Winnebago, Whiteside, Mercer, Rock Island, Knox, Stephenson, Warren, Carroll, Henry and Fulton Counties.
“Too many families in Northwest and Central Illinois struggle to put food on the table, gas in their car and keep up with bills,” said Congresswoman Bustos. “As we work to improve our local economies and lift folks out of poverty, we’ve got to do more to ensure that resources reach those most in need. This legislation will make sure taxpayer dollars are used in the most effective and impactful ways possible.”

The bipartisan Targeting Resources to Communities in Need Act of 2022 would create smarter, more targeted federal investments in communities that need help the most. If enacted, this bill would assist more high-poverty communities with high-impact, inclusive economic development.
The Targeting Resources to Communities in Need Act directs the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to work government-wide, program by program to increase the share of funds going to persistent poverty counties, high-poverty census tracts and other high and persistent poverty areas.
