Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) announced that the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) is accepting applications for more than $156 million in grant funding.

The COPS grant program supports law enforcement agencies with funding for additional law enforcement officers. The program aims to improve community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.

“In order to keep our communities safe, it’s important our law enforcement agencies have the best tools and resources available to support their officers,” said Congresswoman Bustos. “This year’s COPS grants could help police departments in Northwest and Central Illinois hire additional officers to assist them in better serving our communities. I encourage our local law enforcement agencies to apply for these important funds.”

Any local, state, territorial and tribal law enforcement agencies that have a primary law enforcement authority are eligible to apply. Applications are due by June 16, 2022, at 7:59 PM EST. Additional details on the CHP grant program can be found here.

The Office of Community Oriented Policing Service (COPS) is a part of the U.S. Department of Justice. They have provided over $14 billion in assistance to state and local law enforcement agencies to help hire more officers. The COPS Office also provides funds for the research and development of guides, tools and training for police departments.
