Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17), a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, announced a $1,473,639 grant for the Northwestern Illinois Community Action Agency. The grant was awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and will be put toward a Head Start project.

The Northwestern Illinois Community Action Agency (NICAA) seeks to diminish the causes and effects of poverty by helping people identify and obtain the resources to achieve stability to build stronger families and communities.

“By supporting Freeport’s Head Start program, we are encouraging a lifetime of learning for our young students,” said Congresswoman Bustos. “Today, I’m pleased to announce that over $1.4 million in federal funds are heading to the Northwestern Illinois Community Action Agency. This funding will help set up our children for success in school and beyond.”

Cheri Bustos of Moline is in her 4th term as Congresswoman for Illinois’ 17th District.

Head Start promotes school readiness for young children from birth to age five by providing programming to enhance cognitive, social and emotional development. Head Start programs are operated by local nonprofit organizations, community action agencies and school districts. Currently, Head Start programs serve more than 36 million children.

Congresswoman Bustos is a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee that oversees the funding for the Department of Health and Human Services.
