Illinois Congressman Sorensen Announces Funding to Boost Illinois Manufacturing Jobs

Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) and the Department of Commerce announced the first funding opportunities available from the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act. This funding will invest in domestic semiconductor manufacturing to boost local economies, bolster national security, and shore up supply chains.

“The CHIPS and Science Act is a huge step forward for science, technology, and our nation’s working families,” said Sorensen. “I will continue working with federal and local partners to bring these investments to Central and Northwestern Illinois so we can grow manufacturing jobs here at home and make sure we can compete globally.”

The first funding opportunity seeks applications for projects to construct, expand, or modernize commercial facilities to produce leading-edge, current-generation, and mature-node semiconductors.

Awards will take the form of direct funding, federal loans, and/or federal guarantees of third-party loans. Awards are designed to complement private investment and other sources of funding. These awards will be made as soon as applications can be evaluated and negotiated.

All potential applicants, including those for future funding opportunities, are encouraged to submit statements of interest. Read more about the application and evaluation process here. If you would like to request a letter of support, please contact Congressman Sorensen’s Rock Island office at (309) 786-3406.

The CHIPS and Science Act provides $52.7 billion in federal funding to revitalize the U.S. semiconductor industry, including $39 billion in semiconductor incentives, $13.2 billion in research, development, and workforce development, and $500 million to strengthen global supply chains.
