Want To Trace Your Family Tree?
If you’re interested in learning more about the story of you, trace your way to the Rock Island Public Library’s five-part online genealogy series. The series of programs kick off Wednesday, July 24, and lead up to a special presentation in late September on DNA testing for ancestry.
The genealogy series offers insights on using library resources and online sites to get the best results from an online genealogy search. Each program starts at 6:00 pm at the Rock Island Downtown Library, 401 19th Street, on the following dates:
· Wednesday, July 24: Making the Most of Ancestry.com
· Wednesday, July 31: HeritageQuest Training
· Wednesday, August 14: Making the Most of Fold3
· Wednesday, August 28: Making the Most of FamilySearch.org
· Wednesday, Sept. 11: Using Multiple Genealogy Programs to Find Your Ancestors
To help you take your search to the next step, the library is bringing in special guest speaker on Amber Lowrey to speak on “Family Fingerprints: What Your DNA Can Reveal,” from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, on Wednesday, Sept. 25,also at the Downtown Library.
The topic brings light to DNA ancestry testing, which many amateur genealogists have found a useful tool for opening paths to their family history. With several companies offering the news stories, and lots of news stories about the pros and cons of ancestry DNA testing, it can be hard to know just what you can learn. The presentation will help participants discover what DNA testing can reveal about your ancestors, and how to use this information in their research.
Amber Lowery, a Peoria-based genealogist and librarian, has worked with DNA since 2016. She is eager to share her knowledge and discoveries through DNA and family research. Amber works as a Local Reference Assistant with Peoria Public Library’s History and Genealogy department, and also enjoys crafting, telling stories, and helping others discover their family history.
All programs in the series are free and do not require registration. The events are part of the Rock Island Library’s life-long learning programming for summer and early fall.
