Rock Island Names Parents Of The Month For May
The district’s F.A.C.E team selects a parent/guardian and school each month that goes above and beyond!
Parent/Guardian of the Month
The district’s F.A.C.E (Family and Community Engagement) recognizes parents/guardians who are making a positive impact in our school district and community.
Schools can nominate a parent/guardian who goes above and beyond to support the needs of children, our school, and/or our community. The winner receives a gift card, a bunt cake, and a sign that can be displayed outside their residence.
Heather Muir – Earl Hanson – nominated by Sarah Leonard
Heather for the last several years has taken over the job of updating the Earl Hanson school marquee. Rain, shine, or cold it is always updated. The other wonderful thing that Heather has done is making sure that every staff member at Earl Hanson felt appreciated during Staff Appreciation Week for the last several years. She will be missed as her son goes to 7th-Grade next year.

Melanie Rice – Longfellow – nominated by Melody Oswald
Melanie volunteers every month to attend the Superintendent’s meeting for the District. Melanie is there to represent Longfellow Elementary. Melanie then comes back to discuss the outcomes with the principal of the building. She is very involved in Sophia’s education and comes to school to be as involved as necessary for the betterment of Sophia and Longfellow.
Deidra and Ryan Dunbar- Thomas Jefferson -nominated by Ian Scott & John Hawley
This family is amazing! The Dunbars have three children at TJ. However, they support two schools. Deidre (mom) is a Special Education Paraprofessional at RICMS. Between the two schools they volunteer for family events, and solicit donations that have supported both schools over the course of the past two years. She is willing to go over and above. Her family has been in several times to help with setting up or cleaning the classroom. Her kids have donated toys and Legos for our students to use. She and her family have helped with many school events like collecting donations for the carnival, installing basketball hoops, leading a group of students who work after school to make our Top Tornado video weekly, and serving at various FACE events. Even though they are split between Rock Island and United Township, they are helpful and kind to both! Thank you Dunbar family for being an amazing asset to RICMS and the community as a whole. We are extremely lucky to have them in our district and active in two different elementary schools!
