Mac’s Tavern Food Is Everything You’d Want And More, Says Doc Kaalberg

Last night was inspirational. I’ve never been more impressed with a Bartender/Server/Jack of all trades. A late meeting ended our night at Macstavern Davenport in downtown Davenport.
I’ve heard rumors of them having some of the best wings in the Quad Cities, so I may or may not have slipped this casually into conversation. First and foremost, this isnt your typical bar. A wide open setting lets you find a booth or a table to sit, or you can cozy up to the bar. A few families are sitting at the tables tonight so we choose the bar. Peter promptly takes are drink orders and hands us menu’s. Part intellectual and giant bearded man, I’m impressed right off that bat of how much energy this man has. I don’t think he stops moving or cleaning, or taking other peoples orders the whole time he is taking care of us. For a few minutes I think he actually splits into 3 people at once. He is clearly Superhuman.

The wings.
I order the Hot Honey wings. Not sure on how hot they are going to be, I take the easy way out. I regret this and know I’ve lost the honor of my people, the Spicy Eaters. There isn’t much hot to this honey, however the wings are fried perfectly. A crispy texture leads way to juicy chicken. I’m proud to say I cleaned the bones. I wish I had gone with the Thai Reaper wings. Next time I’ll step up to the plate or basket.
7.6/10 with a asterisks score of 8.8/10, I’ll donate 1.2 points for my cautious order.
The meal.
Bangers and Mash. Grilled and split smoked sausages, served in homestyle mash potatoes with grilled onions and gravy. This is the type of plate that brings me back for more. again and again and again. A giant plate of lumpy homemade mash potatoes that would remind you of how Meemaw used to make them. A hearty gravy that doesn’t taste over salted or processed and grilled onions so tasty they could be a plate all their own. Seriously, I’d order a bowl of these onions as a side they were that good. Gluttony sets in and I forced myself to finish everything to the last bite, leaving it so I have some dignity when I walk out. My only regret is not licking the plate.

I walked into this place with low expectations. I was ready for overpriced bar food with no prep, and no taste. I was simply blown away. The menu isn’t overwhelming, but offers a little bit of everything for everyone. After a string of bad experiences in Downtown Davenport, I am finally happy and rejuvenated by this experience. This is what I’ve been looking for, and dreaming of. To think it was all made possible by a 1 man front of the house show, is mind boggling. I know the BOH, Cooks or Chefs are responsible for my plates, so kudos to you as well. You have all done Mac’s a huge service. Looking forward to my next meal with you.
Your friend in food,
