Western Illinois University Makes Administrative Announcements
MACOMB/Moline, IL – As the new year begins, three Western Illinois University administrators will continue serving in their respective interim roles, according to WIU President Guiyou Huang.
John W. Smith will continue to serve as WIU’s interim vice president for student services (VPSS), while Teresa Smith and Gary Swegan will continue as the interim Chief Financial Officer (CFO)/interim associate vice president for budget and finance and interim associate vice president for enrollment management, respectively, through June 30.
“I am most pleased that John, Teresa and Gary have agreed to continue serving in their respective roles,” Huang said. “Their collective experience will allow us to continue the good work they’ve done to date, and to position Western for a successful future.”
(John) Smith was named to the post as the interim vice president in July 2019. In addition, Smith has served as director of Beu Health Center since July 2015, after serving as the center’s interim director. Previously, he was the assistant director at Beu from January 2009 until the interim appointment in early 2015.
(Teresa) Smith, who began in her role at WIU in September 2020, has served as an independent higher education consultant since 2013. She was hired with the assistance of AGB Interim Search.
Smith has held recent interim CFO and consulting assignments at MacMurray College, Newberry College (South Carolina), Presbyterian College (South Carolina) and Northern Arizona University. Before becoming an independent consultant, Smith was the vice president for administration and CFO at Tallahassee (FL) Community College (TCC), and as the interim vice president for information technology at TCC. She also served as the senior vice president for administration, vice president for business affairs and CFO/comptroller and director of finance at Piedmont Technical College. Smith has also worked as a controller and financial analyst in the private sector.
Swegan has served as the interim associate vice president of WIU’s new enrollment management division since January 2020. Before coming to WIU, Swegan served as the associate vice president for enrollment planning and management at Youngstown State for five years, and in admissions-related leadership roles at Bowling Green State University for 24 years.
