Western Illinois University Fresh Check Day Sept. 23
The Western Illinois University Counseling Center (UCC) will host a Fresh Check Day for WIU students from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23 on the Multicultural Center lawn (rain location: Multicultural Center).
The annual event is a day to check-in with college students regarding mental health awareness and suicide prevention.
“This is an uplifting day that brings our services directly to our students,” said UCC Counselor and Fresh Check organizer Marsha Dace. “Our goals are to increase student awareness of the mental health resources available, reducing the stigma and misconceptions around mental health and suicide prevention, empowering students to recognize signs within themselves and others and increasing students’ willingness to ask for help. We are here for you.”
Fresh Check Day will include food, prizes and giveaways and interactive activities to provide information about various mental health topics.
“Join us to learn more about the resources available at WIU, and how you can not only help yourself, but your friends and family members as well,” Dace added.
Fresh Check Day was founded by the Jordan “Matthew” Porco Memorial Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to prevent suicide in the college and college entry population, in the name and spirit of Jordan Matthew Porco who died by suicide in 2011.
