U.S. Constitution Day Being Celebrated Sept. 17 at Western Illinois University

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University will celebrate U.S. Constitution Day Thursday, Sept. 17 both virtually and through channel 3.

This year’s theme is “The U.S. Constitution: Applying the Enduring Document to Our Lives.”

Constitution Day celebrates the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution in 1787.

U.S. Constitution Day Being Celebrated Sept. 17 at Western Illinois University“This year’s Constitution Day celebration features a Zoom event with Dr. Heriberto Urby, and a panel discussion on WIU channel 3 with Dr. Keith Boeckelman and Dr. Rick Hardy, and Lt. Colonel Joan Sommers will serve as moderator,” said Honors College Director Paul Schlag. “In addition, programming about the U.S. Constitution will play on channel 3, and across campus, throughout the day. Studying the Constitution is vital as it provides indispensable safeguards of liberty and justice.”

This year’s schedule of events includes:

Thursday, Sept. 17

• 9:30-10:30 a.m. – Live Zoom event with Assistant Professor of Law Enforcement and Justice Administration Assistant Professor Heriberto Urby. The Zoom link can be found at wiu.edu/honors/constitution.

• 1 p.m. – Panel discussion, “Article V and Amending the Constitution,” with WIU Keith Boeckelman, chair of the WIU departments of History and Political Science; Political Science Professor Rick Hardy and Lt. Col. Joan E. Summers, chair of the WIU military science department.

Immediately following the panel discussion, the 2019 discussion, “Separation of Powers with Checks and Balances,” will air on channel 3. Other Constitution-related programming will air on channel 3 and across campus throughout the day.
