This Week’s Video You Deserve Is One To Make You Sleep With One Eye Open

Mondays can be rough.

And so, every Monday, we give you a music video. A fun, funny music video. Something that’ll make you smile, make you laugh, make you reminisce, and make you realize that back in the day, music video creators were probably either insane or heavily intoxicated. But were also incredibly entertaining.

This Week's Video You Deserve Is One To Make You Sleep With One Eye OpenWe call this feature, The Video You Deserve, and you can find it every Monday on your site for fun, free entertainment and features, QuadCities.com.

Our latest video is from a band which had been struggling about the Midwest for a while during the late ’70s and early ’80s with a much different, more rock sound, before hitting it big with a far more laid back melodic pop sound and a video that, at the time, and now, is a little strange and creepy.

The group The Romantics had been well known as a popular bar band and live draw, and had a minor chart hit with a song that should’ve been a much bigger smash — the volcanic rock pop song “What I Like About You,” which, oddly enough, is the song they’re far more remembered for today, even though it didn’t come anywhere near as close to being as big a hit on the charts as the one you’re about to see.

After all, “What I Like About You” barely scraped the outer reaches of the Top 40, while this tune, “Talking In Your Sleep,” went Top Five, coming within a few places of the number one spot. But, oddly enough, more people seem to associate and remember The Romantics for “What I Like About You,” which became a massive club and bar hit, not to mention a staple of pretty much every high school dance in the ’80s and early ’90s.

But, chart-wise, this was the bigger hit. Perhaps it was because of the video, which featured a number of scantily-clad women, back when that was actually less common and more scandalous in videos. Even more odd was the band’s placement as voyeurs throughout this video, starting from the beginning when they pop up like a bunch of Peeping Toms to show off their gigantic hairstyles to a woman pulling off her skimpy black bra and panties to chuck on a granny gown. That leads to the band walking through a warehouse full of sleeping women likewise dressed in outfits ranging from sultry to Golden Girls-esque. Perhaps they wanted to cover up to avoid being stabbed by any of the band’s porcupine-like hairstyles? I guess we’ll never know.

At any rate, I’m not quite sure I’d want to close my eyes and fall asleep around these dudes, but the song was pretty damn catchy, and it became the biggest hit for The Romantics. They would have one more chart visit with “One In A Million,” but that didn’t live up to its name and came nowhere close to this song chart-wise, your Video You Deserve, “Talking In Your Sleep”…
