QCTW Seeking Entries For Glaspell Playwriting Contest

qctw-logo

As a theatre based in her hometown of Davenport, Iowa, the QC Theatre Workshop believes in the importance of sharing and sustaining the legacy of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Susan Glaspell. To this end, the Workshop will produce the first annual Susan Glaspell Playwriting Contest.

Susan Glaspell was born in Davenport, Iowa in 1876. She was a journalist, author, actor and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright. She founded the Provincetown Players, one of the first great American theatres, which launched the careers of such luminaries as Eugene O’Neil, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Theodore Dreiser. Due to the immense contributions she made during her lifetime she has often been called “The First Lady of American Drama”

The Workshop is calling for submissions that feature strong female lead characters and focus on issues of social justice. The plays will be graded by a team of volunteer readers and a selection committee and the winning plays will be performed in February 2017.

Three categories of submissions are available: Local Adult, Local Student, and National.

Local Student Category:

  • Open to any playwrights residing in the Quad City area who are in 6th-12th grades during the 2016-2017 school year
  • Scenes or monologues between approximately 2 and 5 minutes in length
  • No submission fee

Local Adult Category:

  • Open to any playwrights residing in the Quad City area who are 18 years of age or older
  • One-act plays (between approximately 30 minutes and 1 hour in length)

  • Open to any playwrights residing in the United States
  • 10-minute plays (between 5 and 15 pages in length)
  • Submission fee: $15

Deadline for all categories: December 15, 2016

The winning submissions in each category will be performed in February at the Susan Glaspell Playwriting Festival. (Performance dates to be determined.) The winning playwrights will be invited to participate in the rehearsal process, and will be honored at the public performances.
