Peter and the Starcatcher Makes Its Q-C Debut
Quad City Theatre Workshop in Davenport will open Peter and the Starcatcher–the last production of their current season–on Friday, June 2. The show tells the back story to Peter Pan in the most playful and endearing way. With a cast that packs a punch, audiences will be sad if they miss this star-catching production running June 2-3, 9-10, 16-17 at 7:30 p.m. and June 4, 11 and 18 at 3 p.m. Admission is pay what it’s worth, following the performance. This will be the first local production of this highly-rated Broadway show.
This show is about love, life, hope and it’s about being a kid no matter how old you are. Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune said, “In ‘Peter Pan,’ the Lost Boys are mostly a happy crew.” In this telling of Peter’s story “there is a potent exploration of the loneliness of the orphan, a kind of tacit explanation of why so many great children’s books follow the fortunes of courageous kids who somehow have found themselves on Earth without parents to kiss them good night. Such kids have sorrows, but they also learn self-reliance and embrace adventure, ” the Tribune reported in a review of the 2015 touring cast.
The Broadway production ran to great acclaim and was nominated for nine Tony categories, winning five of them. Our Quad-Cities area cast with their sheer talent and enthusiasm for the content of this show will find a way to reach that child within you. Between their fun ensemble ability and each individual’s inimitable stage presence you will be entertained throughout the whole show.
A young orphan and his mates are shipped off to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. At sea, a precocious young girl named discovers the boys Molly and what ensues is stuff of magic and imagination with lessons of friendship, duty and despair. According to Music Theatre International, “this show upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up (a.k.a. Peter Pan)”.
Peter and the Starcatcher’s director is, Calvin Vo, graduate of Augustana College and currently employed at Moline High School as the Theatre Director and Head Speech Coach. He has worked on shows at the Workshop before and is thrilled to be working such a talented cast.
This production is full of Workshop veterans such as Mike Schulz (Black Stache), Jessica Denney (Molly), Jordan McGinnis (Alf/Music and Assistant Director), Lis Athas (Production Stage Manager) and Emma Brutman (Scenic Designer). Director Calvin Vo is also a Workshop veteran.
Peter and the Starcatcher will be presented at the QC Theatre Workshop, 1730 Wilkes Ave., Davenport, Iowa, June 2-18, Friday and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Doors open a half hour before each performance.
Admission is QC Theatre Workshop’s “pay what it’s worth” pricing policy: guests see the play first and then pay afterward. This allows viewers to determine what the experience was worth to them personally. An innovative strategy, it was designed to create a wholly accessible theatrical experience for Quad-Cities patrons regardless of financial means, The unique policy has been a great success!
