Baseball Project Slides Into Codfish Hollow On Friday

baseball projectA notable indie band featuring members of two of the greatest alternative groups of all time is doing a home run trot into the Quad-Cities this weekend.

The Baseball Project, featuring members of R.E.M., and the Wooldridge Brothers will perform from 7 p.m. to midnight Friday at Codfish Hollow Barnstormers, 5013 288th Ave Codfish Hollow, Maquoketa, Iowa.

Tickets ($20-25) are available here.

Featuring Scott McCaughey, Steve Wynn, Mike Mills, Linda Pitmon and Peter Buck, the group takes its distinct name from their love of the signature sport and intertwines its love of music and baseball throughout its tour dates, gigs and projects. It often plays at baseball stadiums and during games and had a documentary recorded for ESPN.

The supergroup emerged from a jam session together at R.E.M.’s 2007 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and led to what was widely believed to be a one-off album, “Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails” later that year. However, the group has continued to perform and record together and released another disc, “The Baseball Project, Volume 2: High and Inside,” in 2011 and “3rd,” its (obviously) third record, in 2014.

Members of R.E.M., Buck and McCaughey have also previously played together in Robyn Hitchcock and The Venus 3, The Minus 5 and Tuatara. Wynn is the former leader of the highly influential ‘80s alt rock band The Dream Syndicate as well as Gutterball and currently plays with Pitmon in Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3.
