Rock Island Public Library Bursting With Activities For The Summer
Rock Island Public Library is rockin’ it with activities for families this summer!
The library sent out a massive list of events and other cool stuff, and here are all the details:
Children’s Events:
Registration required for most programs, so we can contact participants with links, videos, and instructions on kit pick-up, if applicable. Each kit will contain supplies and instructions.

Absolute Science: VIEW on demand. By special arrangement with our friends at Absolute Science, we’re bringing you virtual Science & Magic Thursdays! Register, and we’ll send you a private YouTube video link for fun Absolute Science shows on most Thursdays, from June 11 to July 30. (No show the week of July 4.) Videos average from 12 to about 30 minutes, with each week bringing you a different show! Watch anytime you want! All ages/family/everyone.

Mr. Taylor Sings, Online Performance: June 24, 10:30 am to 11:30 am. All Ages
Imagine the Story Art Series: Tutorial online with Instructor Gloria B from 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm, June 16, 23, 30, July 7, and 14. Five weeks of take-home supplies provided to registered participants. Projects are aimed at a skill level for students going into third through 8th grades. Registration required, participants will get supplies for five projects. Sign up online or call 309-732-7360. Math Club: Tutorial online with Instructor Elizabeth R from 3:00 to 3:30 pm, June 16, June 23, June 30, July 7, and 14. Take home kit for at-home learning provided for registered participants. Suggested for Grades 2 to 7. Learn enhanced math concepts together in a fun, engaging way. Show us your work on our Facebook page!
Carle’s Creators: Tutorial offered online with Miss Sue, 2:00 to 2:30 pm, June 16, 23, 30, July 7, 14. Introduces younger, elementary age children to authors and illustrators and the art techniques they use in a fun, informal art experiences. Video tutorial paired with a take-home kit for registered participants. Each session is based on an illustration style from a Children’s picture book, and is aimed at a skill level for Kindergarten-2nd grades. Registration required: Sign up online or call 309-732-7360. Take and Make Crafts: Explore your creativity with weekly take home and make opportunities for school age children in grades K-6. Supplies are limited, so we must have a confirmed number of kits needed by the preceding Friday. Pick up starts the following Monday and continues through the week. Complete the craft on your own time, and show us what you made by posting on our Facebook page.

Take Write Now, Wednesdays- June 10-July 22. Wednesday is the “Write” day for some writing fun! Register for this series to be contacted about picking up your Take and Make writing kit. Complete the project on your own time, then share your story or post a picture in the comments of our Facebook page! Weekly projects include:

Children’s Book Talks: Online book suggestions from Miss Ranell for older readers who are reading independently. Early Learning:

Virtual Play and Grow/Baby Lapsit: June 3 and July 1. For ages 3 and under. Miss Ranell will read a board book, present some bouncy rhymes and fingerplays and offer more activities and book suggestions in the comments to do together on your own time. Presented via Facebook Live at 10:30 am, watch live or view the recording on your own time.
Take and Make Petite Picassos: June 15, July 13. All day. Use all of your senses with hands-on art for ages 5 and under. Registration is required for these events. Registered participants will be contacted about picking up a bag of supplies for each project.
Virtual Big Screen Story! Pick up a craft kit and watch the animated story, available for free on Kanopy Kids with your Rock Island Public Library card. Do the craft on your own time, and let us know how it went.
· June 16: Click Clack Moo Cows That Type, by Doreen Cronin, What do the cows want? Watch the fun as a bunch of literate cows turn Farmer Brown’s farm upside down.
· July 16: Mother Bruce, by Ryan T. Higgins. Bruce the bear likes to keep to himself. That, and eat eggs. But when his hard-boiled goose eggs turn out to be real, live goslings, he starts to lose his appetite. And even worse, the goslings are convinced he’s their mother. Bruce tries to get the geese to go south, but he can’t seem to rid himself of his new companions. What’s a bear to do?
Ready, Set, Kindergarten: Register to pick up a packet of worksheets, a small paperback, and activity to do at home that help you reinforce the skills your child needs to be ready for Kindergarten. The folder is the same for all dates, so you choose the pickup date that works for you. Pick-up dates include 6/29, 7/6, 7/13, 7/20 & 7/27

Virtual Book Talks for Teens: Every Monday at 1:30pm on Facebook Live
Animal Crossing Event: Wednesday, June 10, 2:00-3:30. Join us through your Nintendo Switch. Players with online access can visit Emily’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons island with the Dodo Code that we’ll share on Facebook. Sell turnips and fruit, check out Nook’s Cranny, and see our Little Free Library!

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before Scrapbooking: Mondays, June 22 and 29, 2:00-3:00pm. Do you love the book or movie, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before? Order your scrapbooking kit via curbside at the Downtown Library, then join us at the Rock Island Public Library YouTube channel! Make Your Own Zine: Mondays, July 6 and 13, 2:00-3:00pm: July is Zine Month! Pick up a Zine-making kit via curbside at our Downtown Library, then join us on Facebook Live for tips on making your own zine! We’ll provide the materials, you bring the creativity! Adulting For Teens: Mondays, July 20 and 27, 2:00-3:00pm: Rock Island Public Library YouTube Channel. Are you a teen wondering how to adult? (Adults wonder that, too.) Join us for this interactive presentation, for the basics of cooking, getting a job, planning for college, managing money, fixing your car, and more.
Mixed Ages:
Happee Birthdae Harry Potter Virtual Trivia! Thursday, July 30, 6:00-7:00pm: Facebook Live. Help us celebrate Harry Potter’s 40th birthday! We welcome wizards and muggles of ALL AGES to celebrate “the boy who lived.” Play on your own or as a team. You’re already a wizard if you know why Happy Birthday is misspelled!
Southwest Take and Make Crafts: All ages, registration required. 6:00 to 7:00 pm, Summer events will be presented as take-and-make projects, unless we notify you differently.
Registered participants will be contacted about how to pick up their kit at the Southwest Library. Sign up via calendar or call to register. Crafts include:

Summer Movie Series: Friday Fairy Tales for Grownups Suggestions –
Our reference department has assembled a movie list of fairy tales and fantastic stories suitable for grownups movies that match our Imagine Your Story summer theme. You should be able to view these using Hoopla, Kanopy, or by requesting the title from our DVD collection.
Watch our Facebook page each Friday for themed suggestions like these: Every Friday during our months of Summer Reading we are excited to bring a set of themed movies to you all available through the Library. This weekend we have a set of Creature Feature films for you all to enjoy on Hoopla. Access these titles and more now with your library card!
Homemade Dog Treats – Online Demo, August 26, 3:30 to 4:00 pm. Celebrate Dog Appreciation day by watching a live demo on how to make a small batch of homemade treats your tail-wagging pal will love! This event will be put on via Facebook Live on the Rock Island Public Library Facebook page.
World War II Continuation Lecture: 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, July 8, Rock Island Public Library Southwest Library, 9010 Ridgewood Road. Rescheduled presentation of a lecture postponed from May due to the Governor’s Stay-At-Home order. Learn about the fall of Berlin and Victory in Europe (VE) Day from an Army Sustainment Command historian. Adults, 18 and up. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS EVENT DUE TO CAPACITY AND DISTANCING REQUIREMENTS.
