Celebrated indie-pop stalwarts Ra Ra Riot are returning after an unofficial hiatus with a slate of upcoming shows : three headlining dates in May (during which the band will play its debut record The Rhumb Line in full), and a run supporting close friends Vampire Weekend across the Midwest in July and August.
The pandemic mandated an involuntary break for the typically busy group, which had just released the ambitious and buoyant Superbloom in late 2019 : tours, rehearsals, and writing and recording sessions were all canceled or put on indefinite hold while the individual members — drummer Kenny Bernard, guitarist Milo Bonacci, singer Wes Miles, bassist Mathieu Santos and violinist Rebecca Zeller — navigated the new, uncertain world. But the pause did have its benefits. Along with new experiences and realities came new creative visions unmoored from the constant cycle of album releases and touring, while the members finally had time to settle into their home lives: there were marriages and cross-country moves, and everyone in the band became first-time parents.
The longest the band had ever gone without playing a show was only a few months; suddenly, several years had fallen away. The Rhumb Line, their tragically-tinged and feted debut, turned 15, while Beta Love, the group’s dark and divisive third record, turned 10. Now both sensing the passage of time more acutely and seeking to celebrate the power of music to transcend all obstacles and limitations Ra Ra Riot is returning to the stage in 2024.
