Midsommar Spins Swedish Sounds At Bishop Hill

Midsommar Spins Swedish Sounds At Bishop HillWith the summer solstice upon us, how do you plan to celebrate? How about joining in a lively Swedish tradition and celebrate with a Midsommer Music Festival?

Bishop Hill, a Utopia on the Prairie, will be holding their Midsommer Music Festival on Saturday June 24 from 11:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Concerts in the village park will begin at 11:30 a.m. Music will be provided by Black Hawk Pipes & Drums, Hammer & Pick, Jazz on the Side, and Zak and Erin.

Members of the Bishop Hill Heritage Associated (BHHA) will be also hosting their 2nd Annual Rubarber Fundraiser. The BHHA will be serving homemade rhubarb baked goods, coffee and lemonade on the porch of the Steeple Building Museum from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Proceeds will be used to support BHHA activities.

At 4 p.m. the decoration of the Maypole will begin. All are welcome to participate in the procession to the Colony School and dance on the east lawn to ensure a bountiful summer!

A barn dance will commence at 7 p.m. right there at the Colony School. Admission to the barn dance is $5. The Rusty Pickup String Band will be providing the music and Gail Hintze will be doing the calling!

If you get too hot or dry while exploring Bishop Hill, the Vasa National Archives invites you to take a break and enjoy fika, the Swedish custom of socializing over a drink and a snack. While you are there, try your hand at the make-and-take clay sculpture station!

Bishop Hill is a quiet country village where the charm and character of the original colony have survived the test of time. Bishop Hill is a National Landmark Village, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and it is an Illinois State Historic Site.
