Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble Is ‘Unbound’ This Weekend
Augustana College’s Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble will perform their concert titled, “Anchored & Unbound: Songs of Faith, Hope & Freedom” at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 29 at First Lutheran Church in Geneseo, Ill.
The group is a select women’s ensemble for singers who wish to develop advanced choral skills. The group is conducted by Dr. Michael Zemek and accompanied by Gail Baldwin. The ensemble is named after Jenny Lind, a nineteenth-century Swedish opera singer often known as the “Swedish Nightingale.”
Concert highlights will include “Les balons” composed by student Monica Gil ’18, “Ain’t No Grave Can Hold My Body Down”, a song with origins in the American South in the first half of the twentieth century arranged by Paul Caldwell and Sean Ivory, and “Closer to the Fire” from “Songs of Hafez” by Abbie Betinis. Jenny Lind will also reprise the song “In Dulci Jubilo” arranged by Matthew Culloton from their 2016 Christmas at Augustana performance.
The ensemble will sing a concert in the Quad-Cities on Saturday, February 4 at 4 p.m. in Centennial Hall on the campus of Augustana College.
The concert on Sunday will be held at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, 114 East Main St., Geneseo, Ill.
