Celebrate Mother’s Day At Beaux Arts Fair

The 68th bi-annual Beaux Arts Fair returns to the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds, 2815 W. Locust St., Davenport, today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The fair is free to the public and is held rain or shine each May and September. The Beaux Arts Fund Committee, a non-profit group of volunteers, donates all proceeds to the Figge Art Museum to fund exhibitions and educational programs. No commissions will be charged.

The last spring Beaux Arts Fair was held in May 2019 at the fairgrounds – when it moved there from outside the Figge in downtown Davenport, because of flooding that spring.

During that art fair, the committee canvassed the patrons and the artists about the location. There were overwhelming positive comments by both the patrons and the artists to continue at the fairgrounds, committee member Cathy Bodine said this week.

“After several months of discussion, the committee decided to hold the spring art fair in 2020 at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds, but remain at the Figge for the fall art fair,” she said. “When

Covid hit, the fairgrounds told us they would move our rent payment to 2021. With that, we are at the fairgrounds this weekend. The fall art fair will be at the Figge.”

There are 110 artist booths at this weekend’s fair, with approximately 75% from the Q-C region, Bodine said.

The first 68 children who go to the information booth on Saturday will get a take-home craft, and the first 68 moms who go to the information booth on Sunday (Mothers’ Day) get a gift from a local artist.

The fall Beaux Arts Fair is scheduled for Sept. 11 and 12, 2021 at the Figge’s Bechtel Plaza, 225 W. 2nd St., Davenport. For more information and a complete lineup of artists, visit www.beauxartsfair.com.

Check Out Art At The Airport

The newest Quad City Arts’ Art at the Airport exhibit is all in the family — paintings by Kristin Quinn of Davenport, with ceramic creations by

her sister, Megan Quinn, of Rock Island, on display through June 30.

Megan Quinn is a professor at Augustana College in Rock Island, while Kristin Quinn is a professor at St. Ambrose University in Davenport. Megan is a ceramic artist, and Kristin is a painter.

The two sisters grew up in a family of five children with parents who were educators, and their dad was a physicist who specialized in optics and provided access to visually stimulating apparatuses: prisms,

lenses, holograms, etc. Along with lessons on the natural world, they were encouraged to ask questions.

Growing up learning to really look at things and question how things work or what causes things to be the way they are, informs the way they look at art and how they approach their work, according to a Quad City Arts release. Although Megan and Kristin are different artistically, both enjoy experimentation and are inspired by nature and science.

These sister artists approach their very different art forms with a similar sensibility. In addition to the airport gallery, the artist’s works can be seen and purchased online: https://www.quadcityarts.com/art-at-the-airport.html.

Art at the Airport in The Quad Cities International Airport gallery is easy to find. It is just across from the gift shop and restaurant and right before the security checkpoint. The gallery never closes, and you will pay just a dollar for parking.

Mother's Day At Beaux Arts, Ale Trail, A 'Hamilton' Star In Town And More In Today's FUN10!

The QCSO pops concert with “Hamilton” co-star Renee Elise Goldsberry on May 15 has been moved to Davenport’s LeClaire Park.

The beautiful 50-year-old California native — best known for originating the role of Angelica Schuyler in the Broadway smash “Hamilton” – will make her post-Covid live performance debut in the 7:30 p.m. concert, for a long-awaited evening of Broadway, pop, and soul favorites, backed by the Quad City Symphony Orchestra.

“It’s kind of mind-blowing,” Goldsberry said in a Friday phone interview, noting her entire 2020 pops tour schedule was scrapped due to Covid. “I’m really excited because this — I just can’t believe this exists, this opportunity. This is my first one back.”

First announced in early February 2020, the program was originally scheduled for the Adler Theatre, but was moved outside at the longtime home of the QCSO’s Riverfront Pops concerts.

Under the direction of QCSO music director and conductor Mark Russell Smith, the May 15 event will feature Goldsberry’s band, three female backup singers and selections from Broadway hits including “Hamilton,” “Rent,” and “The Lion King,” plus songs by Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Dylan, and more.

Get A Free Concert With Your Vaccine

If you get your Covid vaccine at the Rock Island County mass vaccination clinic in Milan between April 14 and May 20, there will be something special that’s literally music to your ears.

Mother's Day At Beaux Arts, Ale Trail, A 'Hamilton' Star In Town And More In Today's FUN10!

Taking inspiration from famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma’s recent impromptu performance during his Covid vaccine observation period, the Rock Island County Health Department and the Quad City Symphony Orchestra (QCSO) are partnering to bring live music to the mass vaccination site at Camden Centre in Milan.

“Vaccine Variations” is an initiative that arranges for one-hour performances by QCSO musicians starting April 14 in the patient observation area of the vaccination clinic. Due to Covid precautions, the performances will feature string musicians only.

All musicians will be masked and socially distanced during their performances. As a thank you for their decision to vaccinate, patients will receive a discount code valid for upcoming QCSO performances.

“We have given up so much of what makes life joyful because of the pandemic,”  Janet Hill, chief operating officer of the Rock Island County Health Department (RICHD), said Wednesday.

To make an appointment for the Milan vaccine clinic, visit https://richd.org or www.facebook.com/RockIslandCountyHealthDepartment.
