Millie B, I’m Sendin’ Fa Ya… With The Video Ya Deserve

That’s right.

Every Monday we give you a cheesy music video to get your drab week started with a laugh. It drops here on your site for fun entertainment and pop culture, QuadCities.com, every 9:09, every Monday.

Now, last week we went into the rabbit hole of Blackpool Grime, a music genre that was most popular in Blackpool, England, around 2016-2017, to dig around and share the video for the TikTok viral song “M to the B,” by Millie B. But that’s not the full title to the song. It’s actually titled “M to the B (Soph Aspin Send).”

So who the hell is Soph Aspin? And why does it sound like she’s named after a British dessert?

Millie B, I'm Sendin' Fa Ya... With The Video Ya DeserveSoph Aspin, like Millie B, and the groundbreaker of the scene, the filthy-mouthed Little T, are all part of the Blackpool Grime scene, which was like something you’d see Tipper Gore railing against back in the day. It was basically a bunch of lower income/working class pre-teens and early teens swearing and ripping on each other in filthy ways in rap songs. Now, some alarmists might see this and weep for the state of pre-teens and teens nowadays, being so cruel and foul-mouthed.

Those alarmists obviously have long forgotten about what junior high is like.

Junior high is full of toxic vitriol, ridicule and ripping on each other, and plenty of swearing. Or at least my junior high experience certainly was. So Blackpool Grime was hailed by critics as being a real-world illumination of what was actually going on, and what has been going on, for decades, probably centuries. Let’s face it, the only place junior high is ever remotely civil and fun is in Disney movies.

And so it went with the war between the two “mean girls” of Grime — Soph Aspin and Millie B. Aspin came first, and was one of the early stars of the genre, along with Little T, a 12-year-old who rapped about having sex with kids’ mothers and stealing their cars while looking like he should’ve been starring in a Cocoa Pebbles commercial. Aspin was the distaff star of the scene, and so, as the queen, there would inevitably be challengers to her throne, and sure enough, along came a big one — Millie B, an up-and-coming grime rapper who burst out of the gate with the pretty damn catchy “M to the B,” which gained new life this year when it was used as the backdrop for about 95 million TikTok videos.

But that wasn’t the end of the feud.

Of course, when Millie B did a send to Soph Aspin, there had to be a send back, and there was. It’s called “Are You Mad (Millie B Reply),” and the song and video are both grimily hilarious, featuring the usual garbage-mouthed lyrics and a low budget video by the ubiquitous Jack Wilkinson with the singer obviously reading most of her lyrics off her iPhone as she strolls about an unremarkable low end neighborhood, shouting out to KFC and calling Millie B a slag. It’s absurdly hilarious.

And as with the Millie B video, we must warn you, THERE ARE DIRTY LYRICS HERE THAT WILL NOT BE SUITABLE FOR SOME LISTENERS, SO YOU’VE BEEN WARNED BEFORE YOU LISTEN TO THIS. YOU’VE BEEN WARNED.

Next week we’ll get back to cheesy ’80s and ’90s vids, but for now, let’s go with the send back to last week’s send, here’s “Are You Mad (Millie B Send)” by Soph Aspin:
