Library Events Provide Free Fun and Learning during RI/Milan School Break

Families staying in town during the two-week Rock Island/Milan school break will find fun and learning at the Rock Island Public Library.

Library Events Provide Free Fun and Learning during RI/Milan School Break

In scheduled events for all ages, the Rock Island Downtown Library, 401 19th Street, will host a Family Bingo Night where participants will play for candy. The free event is Thursday, October 10 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Community Room. All ages are welcome, and children 6 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required. Other events at the Downtown Library include “Petite Picassos,” which features art and a story for children ages 5 and under accompanied by an adult. The event is Tuesday, October 8 from 10:30 am to 11:30 am in the Downtown Children’s Room. Also on Tuesday, the library offers another meeting of the Girls Who Code Club. The free afterschool offers fun projects to introduce girls in grades 6 through 12 to computer science. Girls Who Code reoccurs on the second Tuesday of each month from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at the Downtown Library.

 

The Downtown Library Children’s Room also offers a free take and make craft kit for parents and children to work on during the break, in addition to a supply of books, puzzles, music, and videos. Parents can also check out board games, culture passes, Explore More Illinois offers, and a growing “Library of Things” to serve as family entertainment during break.

 

Events at the Rock Island Southwest Library, 9010 Ridgewood Road, include the monthly Craft Night on Tuesday, October 8. The library offers a free paper lantern craft for all ages from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. Registration is required. To sign up visit the library website or call 309-732-7338.

 

On Tuesday October 15, the library also offers a free “Rocket into Reading” event from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at the Southwest Library. The free event is for new and growing readers in ages 5 though 8 and includes reading to a therapy dog from the QC Canine Assistance Network (QC CAN.) Each child receives a free string bag. No registration is required.

 

Other events at the Southwest Library include Petite Picassos for ages five and under, from 10:30 to 11:30 am on Wednesday, October 16, and a free movie of interest to families on Thursday, October 17 from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm.  Registration is not required for either event.
