Tim Johnson Named Western Illinois University COAP Employee of the Month
Western Illinois University Academic Advisor Tim Johnson has been named the Council of Administrative Personnel (COAP) Employee of the Month for September.
According to Johnson’s nominator, he has delivered “exemplary academic services to his students,” coming up with innovative ways to provide assistance.
“Tim also came to me with the idea of opening a satellite advising office in the residence hall,” said his nominator. “He adjusted his office hours to meet freshmen where they were at, and when it was most convenient, which was in the evenings.”
Johnson also developed a financial literacy education program for students of color, and served as a mentor to young, black men attending WIU.
His nominator added that Johnson went “above and beyond” when the state went on lock-down in March 2020 and the University’s Rocky’s Resources tutoring program needed to move online with round-the-clock services offered.
“Tim literally created a virtual tutoring lab through the Zoom webinar format,” his nominator said. “He contacted every department help center and employed their tutors through Rocky’s Resources. He coordinated the schedules for 10 student workers to serve as greeters in the tutoring lab. He created a data collection procedure so we could track what classes students needed the most help with and he tracked times and days with the highest attendance. Many days he worked until midnight with the tutoring program.”
The COAP Employee of the Month award is designed to recognize performance above and beyond the employee’s existing duties at WIU based on the criteria. Nominations can be made by supervisors, colleagues, faculty, students, staff or community members.
Monthly winners are given a gift, a reserved parking space for one month and recognition by the University.
