Here’s An ‘Opportunity’ To Check Out The Video You Deserve

Yup, it’s Monday.

And it’s cold and wintry out.

Where can you go for some sunshine and fun?

Well, here of course!

We know Mondays can be rough, so, every Monday, we give you a music video. A fun, funny music video. Something that’ll make you smile, Here's An 'Opportunity' To Check Out The Video You Deservemake you laugh, make you reminisce, and make you realize that back in the day, music video creators were probably either insane or heavily intoxicated. But were also incredibly entertaining.

We call this feature, The Video You Deserve, and you can find it every Monday on your site for fun, free entertainment and features, QuadCities.com.

Today’s video is one which has been chronically misinterpreted since it was released in 1985, and continues to be even more so now with its bizarre inclusion in an insurance commercial. However, it’s that completely strange inclusion which brought it back on the pop culture radar and actually caused it to re-debut at number one on the U.S. dance charts in February after the spot — featuring a dude driving a car as his hood ornament creepily sings along to the song — got substantial airtime during the Super Bowl.

The song?

“Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots Of Money),” by the Pet Shop Boys.

The song was originally released in 1985, prior to the Pet Shop Boys hitting it big, and, like the duo’s initial release of “West End Girls” (the song which would propel them to worldwide stardom in 1986), it totally stiffed. It wasn’t until the song was remixed and re-released on the band’s album “Please,” AND after “West End Girls” had hit number one worldwide, that “Opportunities” became a top ten hit worldwide.

The song, however, has reached its success in somewhat ironic fashion, according to its songwriters, the Pet Shop Boys’ Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant.

Tennant has said in interviews that the entire song is a joke, and that the characters in it are two losers who are engaging in dumbass schemes that are doomed to fail. The whole song was a parody of the rampant capitalism and money-hungry attitude of the ’80s.

However, amusingly enough, many of those same money-hungry folks took it as an anthem for that greed, which it was actually parodying.

As for the new usage of the song, well, it’s just completely out of left field, and seems to have little to nothing to do with anything the song has to do with. However, it got it back on the radar, and it’s a great song from an excellent album, so, why not?

And, why not make it our Video You Deserve this week?

Why not indeed. And here it is, Pet Shop Boys’ “Opportunities,” your Video You Deserve…
