Get Schooled on Your Library Card Benefits with Library University
September is Library Card Sign Up Month, when libraries everywhere remind residents about the awesome benefits of a simple plastic library card. Rock Island Public Library offers insider tips on using that card through free “library university” online courses.
The four Library University sessions are offered at 2:00 pm on Tuesdays in September via the Zoom meeting platform. Each week offers a new look at amazing things RIPL cardholders can access with their free library card. Topics include:
- September 14: Reading challenges with Beanstack: Attendees will learn how to easily keep track their reading, meet personal reading goals, and participate in library reading challenges with the Beanstack website or app.
- September 21: What Should I Read Next? Reader Advisory Tips: If you’ve ever wondered how to find your next great read, this course is for you. Attendees will gain tips and tricks on finding new books and authors. Participants will learn about NovelistPlus, GoodReads, Fantastic Fiction and other great tools and websites to find books you will love.
- September 28: Streaming movies, music, and more. Maybe you already knew that libraries offer DVDs, but did you know that can also save money on streaming fees with your library card? Attendees will learn how to stream thousands of movies and songs at no added cost to them with the library’s Hoopla, Kanopy, and Freegal apps.

Courses are designed for adult attendees with general knowledge on using computers and smart devices. Access to Rock Island Public Library subscription services is available only to holders of a Rock Island Public Library card. Digital collections cannot be shared with cardholders of other libraries. RIPL cards are available at no additional cost to residents of Rock Island and the Milan-Blackhawk Area Public Library District.
