Genesis Health System Looking Into Partnering With Another Health Care System

Genesis Health System Board of Directors announced today that it is beginning a thoughtful process to explore the possibility of partnering with another leading health care system.

Genesis Health System’s partnership exploration process will seek to identify potential opportunities that could help the organization enhance local delivery of care; reinforce its cultural commitment to quality, safety, and patient experience; enhance opportunities to increase support and resources for the workforce; and increase local investment in specialty services based on what’s best for all the communities it serves.

“The strength of Genesis Health System has been built on a 150-year history of meaningful collaboration, grounded in a values-based culture. We have seen our organization become better through partnerships, beginning with the union of Mercy and St. Luke’s hospitals in 1994, and the welcoming of other community hospitals and organizations into the Genesis family. Our successful history of collaborations allows us to move into this exploration process with confidence about who we are and where we choose to go,” said Steve Bahls, Chair of Genesis Health System’s Board of Directors.

The partnership exploration process is an important part of the Board of Directors’ responsibility to ensure the organization can continue advancing its mission.

“We are exploring potential partnerships to ensure that we can grow and thrive into the future in a dynamic and rapidly changing health care environment,” said Doug Cropper, President and CEO of Genesis Health System. “As we consider opportunities, we will focus on identifying meaningful opportunities to drive collaboration that advances not only our clinical goals, but also our strategic vision and values. We are committed to doing what is in the best interest of our patients and communities for the long-term. We will only consider partnerships with other leading systems that support our unwavering focus to address our communities’ local health needs.”

Genesis Health System is entering into partnership exploration with a proven track record of clinical excellence, including national recognition as a Top 15 Health System, Top-Ranked Community Hospital in Iowa, a system performing within the top 1% of the nation in patient safety, and a leader in health IT.

While Genesis Health System is in a position of strength and does not require a partner to secure its future, partnership may create opportunities to address market pressures, provide additional scale and increase local investment as the system continues to navigate a dynamic industry landscape.

The Board and Leadership Team will conduct a controlled competitive process to thoughtfully evaluate a number of potential opportunities. They will work with clinical, leadership and employee advisory groups to help ensure that voices from across the entire organization are heard and considered throughout the exploration process.

Genesis Health System intends to reach an informed decision about the path forward – whether with a potential partner or remaining as an independent system – by summer 2022. More information about the partnership exploration will be provided at www.GenesisHealth.com/exploration and through other Genesis Health System communications channels as the process moves forward.
