Last Chance To See ‘No Child…’ Today At Brunner Theatre

Sydney Chatman and Jalyn Greene know what it’s like to teach theater to minority, inner-city students.

Mamma Mia, John Deere Classic, Reggae Tunes And More In This Week's FUN10So the African-American women are a natural pair to direct and act, respectively, the one-woman show “No Child…,” which is the last Mississippi Bend Players production this summer. It runs through Sunday at Augustana College’s Brunner Theatre Center, 3750 7th Ave., Rock Island.

“No Child…” (written and premiered in 2006 by Nilaja Sun) follows the story of Miss Sun, a visiting teacher who uses theatre as a means of connecting with students in the New York City public school system. This one-person play, based on the playwright’s own experiences, is a tour-de-force as the actor plays 16 different characters in rapid succession, including Miss Sun, her students, other teachers and administrators, and even the school’s 80-year-old janitor.

“An insightful, hilarious, and touching master class not to be missed by anyone concerned about the state of the education system and how it might be improved,” according to MBP.

Jalyn Greene is a 28-year-old an actor, poet, and teaching artist. Detroit born and Chicago based, she received her BFA from Michigan State University. Recent acting credits include “Queen of Sock Pairing” as The Narrator (Red Tape Theatre), “We Are Pussy Riot” as Masha (Red Tape Theatre), “How to Pick a Lock” as Zhara (Rhinofest), “The Dark at the Top of the Stairs” as Cora Flood (understudy) (Eclipse Theatre), and “Breathe, Boom” as Angel (Eclipse Theatre). Greene thrives on the belief that arts education is key in creating compassionate, bold, and effective leaders.

Performances of the new MBP production at Augustana are at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $20; or $15 for students; $17 for faculty and staff and seniors, available HERE or by calling 309-794-7306.

Ragged And Trash Can Annies Reopening Next Weekend

Most struggling businesses only had to deal with a global pandemic last year.

Ragged Records and Trash Can Annie’s Reopen July 17 in New Downtown Davenport Spot

Herington and Heath have been neighbors in business together since 2008, now in their third location in downtown Davenport.

By the time of the mass shutdown in mid-March 2020, Ragged Records and Trash Can Annie’s in downtown Davenport were already closed about 42 weeks – forced out by the historic flooding in 2019. They’re finally ready to reopen at a new nearby building, 311 E. 2nd St., on Saturday, July 17.

“It’s been a dream come true,” Laura Heath – who owns TCA, the vintage clothing, styling and photography business – said this week of the totally renovated space formerly occupied by Abernathy’s, which moved in August 2019 to 432 W. 3rd St., Davenport. “We had a chance to rebuild and here is my true personality.”

She and Ragged Records owner Bob Herington (who were previously at 418 E. 2nd St.), by the Government Bridge, moved into the new location in June 2020, in the 1920s-era building

owned by Pete Stopulos of Ruhl Commercial, which was totally gutted and Stopulos built out the interior.

“It has all new HVAC, new flooring, new storage, dressing rooms, new bathrooms,” Herington said with pride. “It was just an empty concrete shell. He tore all the old windows off the front and put in new.”

Since spring 2021, the two businesses installed new counters, shelves and racks and fully stocked the place with a staggering variety of vintage (men’s, women’s and children’s) clothing, hats, accessories, and scrupulously curated vinyl albums (each hugged by clear plastic wrap). They were able to move and save nearly all their inventory before the downtown flood barriers breached at 3:30 p.m. on April 30, 2019.

RME Rocks With Live At Five On Fridays

The River Music Experience, 2nd and Main streets, Davenport, has brought back the free Live@Five on Fridays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Last year due to Covid, the series was limited to August and September.

Teen Reading Nights, Free Outdoor Concerts, And David Bowie In This Week's QuadCities FUN10!

River Music Experience is a nonprofit that completely pivoted its programming during the pandemic.

The RME courtyard will host live music featuring a wide range of genres and styles. Like last summer, the series asks patrons to wear a mask when you can’t maintain a distance of at least six feet from others not in your party. And when choosing your seating, pick a place at least six feet from other parties. The pavement will be marked to help you in that process.

This year’s schedule of bands is:
