QCTW descends from the theater mountain with ‘Bible’

bible verticalAudiences can plan on having a great time with the Good Book when the QC Theatre Workshop presents its latest stage production The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged), running April 15 through May 1. A rip-roaring comedy by playwrights Adam Long, Reed Martin, and Austin Tichenor and originally produced by the Reduced Shakespeare Company, this acclaimed spoof has been called “a slick, fast, very funny show” by the London Times, and this debuting area play will be brought to life by a sensational three-man cast of local-theatre favorites and Workshop veterans.

The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged) will be presented at the QC Theatre Workshop (1730 Wilkes Avenue, Davenport, IA) April 15 through May 1, with Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday performances at 3 p.m. Doors open a half hour before each performance, and due to some adult language and humor, the show is recommended for ages 13 and older.

With just over 90 minutes to do it, the trio of performers in The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged) attempts to cover all 66 books of its non-secular source through comedic skits, songs, improvisation, and audience interaction, addressing such pressing theological questions as “Did Adam and Eve have navels?” and “Did Moses really look like Charlton Heston?” As they try, the actors each assume the roles of numerous biblical characters, male and female alike, in a gleeful satire-slash-celebration – a show that TheaterJones.com described as “the most hilariously raucous church service you’re likely to see.”

Following its recent productions of more dramatic fare including The Big Meal, The Pillowman, and Tribes, Artistic Director Tyson Danner says The Bible is an exciting, and riotous, change-of-pace for the QC Theatre Workshop.

“We’ve come to be known as the theatre that produces powerful contemporary dramas,” says Danner. “But we want to make sure our audiences have a variety of experiences when they walk through our doors. We are having a blast working on this show, and we can’t wait to make our patrons laugh!”

Directing the Workshop’s new production is improvisational comedian Brent Tubbs – perhaps best-known for appearing opposite Bob Kelly in ComedySportz’s Studio Series presentations of “Tubbs & Kelly Presents …” – and he also makes up one-third of The Bible’s three-man cast, a trio rounded out by fellow performers James Fairchild and Jeremy Mahr.

Each an actor boasting numerous area credits, these three talents have also participated in previous Workshop shows: Tubbs appeared in 2014’s True West alongside Mahr, the latter of whom was also seen in 2013’s Private Eyes, and Fairchild served as the director for 2014’s Bat Boy: The Musical, as well as a co-star in 2013’s Last Call and 2015’s The Pillowman. Danner says he’s thrilled to have the gentlemen join forces for The Bible, and knows that audiences will be equally delighted by their sweetly hysterical stage chemistry.

“This show relies entirely on the chemistry and comedic chops of the three actors, which these guys are overflowing with. It simply could not be done without such experienced comedians and brilliant comedic instincts.”

The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged) will be presented under the QC Theatre Workshop’s “Pay What It’s Worth” pricing policy in which guests see the play first and then pay afterward, allowing viewers to determine what the experience was worth to them personally. This innovative strategy was designed to create a wholly accessible theatrical experience for patrons regardless of financial means, and the policy’s great success – ever since the Workshop’s debut with 2012’s RED – has allowed it to continue for The Bible.
