Predictions for the Golden Globes

Predictions for the Golden GlobesSunday, the Golden Globes will be awarded, with a ceremony hosted by Seth Meyers airing at 7 p.m. CST on NBC. You really never what the hell will happen with the Golden Globes. To quote three time host Ricky Gervais, the Golden Globes are “a bit louder, a bit drunker,” and it always shows, especially in the nominations. I always read the nominees with a plethora of WTF’s. This year is no different and this year is even harder to figure out. I sat down and did my best to sttay one step ahead and so… here are my predictions for Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards:

Best Picture – Drama:

“Call Me by Your Name”

“Dunkirk”

“The Post”

“The Shape of Water”

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

WILL WIN: “The Shape of Water”

SHOULD WIN: “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

DARK HORSE: “The Post”

The HFPA have some quirky taste my money is on Guillermo del Torro’s sea monster romance… heist… drama… whatever it is I think it will take the top prize here. “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” is odd as well but in a very different way. It really says something when something McDonagh has written isn’t the weirdest thing you’ve seen this past year. I haven’t seen “The Post” and I am sure it is spectacular but is to safe of a bet? We shall see.

Best Picture – Comedy or Musical:

“The Disaster Artist”

“Get Out”

“The Greatest Showman”

“I, Tonya”

“Lady Bird”

WILL WIN: “Lady Bird”

SHOULD WIN: “The Big Sick” (can you write in a vote?)

DARK HORSE: “Get Out”

“The Greatest Showman,” the lone musical in this category, checked all the boxes for me but I understand it wasn’t a critical darling and it was “populist” film so I am going with another favorite, Lady Bird. I am not positive how either “Lady Bird” or “Get Out” qualify in this category but hey, The Tourist was also once nominated for Best Comedy, too. So… what do I know? What really should be winning here is “The Big Sick,” the biggest snub of the year which also happens to the best film of the year! Get it together, HFPA!

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama:

Timothée Chalamet, “Call Me by Your Name”

Daniel Day-Lewis, “Phantom Thread”

Tom Hanks, “The Post”

Gary Oldman, “Darkest Hour”

Denzel Washington, “Roman J. Israel, Esq.”

WILL WIN: Gary Oldman, “The Darkest Hour”

DARK HORSE: Timothee Chalamet, “Call Me By Your Name”

Dear Timothee:

Please don’t take this award away from an icon.

Please don’t be like Eddie Redmayne.

Sincerely,
Tristan

P.S. – Gary Oldman rocks.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama:

Jessica Chastain, “Molly’s Game”

Sally Hawkins, “The Shape of Water”

Frances McDormand, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

Meryl Streep, “The Post”

Michelle Williams, “All the Money in the World”

WILL WIN: Meryl Streep, “The Post”

SHOULD WIN: Frances McDormand, “Three Billboards”

DARK HORSE: Sally Hawkins, “The Shape of Water”

You could really give this to any of the powerhouse trio (Hawkins, McDormand or Streep) and I would be cool. I am going to bet Streep will be awarded by the HFPA not only for her performance in “The Post” but for her powerful and moving speech at least year’s ceremony. And I am here for it!

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy:

Steve Carell, “Battle of the Sexes”

Ansel Elgort, “Baby Driver”

James Franco, “The Disaster Artist”

Hugh Jackman, “The Greatest Showman”

Daniel Kaluuya, “Get Out”

WILL WIN: James Franco, “The Disaster Artist”

SHOULD WIN: James Franco, “The Disaster Artist”

DARK HORSE: Daniel Kaluuya, “Get Out”

Kaluuya gives the performance of his life in “Get Out” (and I hope he gets an Oscar nom for it) but man, it’s hard to top Franco’s Tommy Wiseau. You gotta admire Franco’s work here at every level: he directed it, performed in it, produced it… he’s a machine!

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy:

Judi Dench, “Victoria & Abdul”

Helen Mirren, “The Leisure Seeker”

Margot Robbie, “I, Tonya”

Saoirse Ronan, “Lady Bird”

Emma Stone, “Battle of the Sexes”

WILL WIN: Saoirse Ronan, “Lady Bird”

SHOULD WIN: Margot Robbie, “I, Tonya”

DARK HORSE: Judi Dench, “Victoria & Abdul”

Ronan is damn good and she won’t win the Oscar so there’s no shame in awarding her here but I think the “comedic” performance of the year was given by Margot Robbie in “I, Tonya.” What a trip. I wouldn’t be too surprised if she upset this race Sunday night.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture:

Willem Dafoe, “The Florida Project”

Armie Hammer, “Call Me by Your Name”

Richard Jenkins, “The Shape of Water”

Christopher Plummer, “All the Money in the World”

Sam Rockwell, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

WILL WIN: Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project

SHOULD WIN: Sam Rockwell, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

DARK HORSE: Richard Jenkins, “The Shape of Water”

If I am to be honest, Dafoe, Rockwell AND Jenkins deserve a life time achievement win for their performances this year. These dudes are giving performances outside their boxes and giving hope and inspiration to character actors (me) everywhere. Give it to any of them! Go ahead!

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture:

Mary J. Blige, “Mudbound”

Hong Chau, “Downsizing”

Allison Janney, “I, Tonya”

Laurie Metcalf, “Lady Bird”

Octavia Spencer, “The Shape of Water”

WILL WIN: Laurie Metcalf, “Lady Bird”

SHOULD WIN: Laurie Metcalf, “Lady Bird”

DARK HORSE: Allison Janney, “I, Tonya”

Again, both these ladies are personal favorites… from Metcalf’s Aunt Jackie to Janney’s tortured American Beauty mom next door, I have always been a fan and would love to see them both recognized for these incredible performances. Metcalf’s is more nuanced and I think that gives her the upper hand but then again Janney’s is more showy so I guess it depends on what the voters are into this year. I am giddy for either one!

Best Animated Film:

“The Boss Baby”

“The Breadwinner”

“Coco”

“Ferdinand”

“Loving Vincent”

WILL WIN: Coco

SHOULD WIN: Coco

DARK HORSE: Loving Vincent

As long as “The Boss Baby” wins nothing I am good to go. And can I just say, didn’t we already see “Coco?” Wasn’t it called, “The Book of Life?” I haven’t seen “Coco” but it seems awfully familiar.

Best Director – Motion Picture:

Guillermo del Toro, “The Shape of Water”

Martin McDonagh, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

Christopher Nolan, “Dunkirk”

Ridley Scott, “All The Money in the World”

Steven Spielberg, “The Post”

WILL WIN: Guillermo del Torro, “The Shape of Water”

SHOULD WIN: Guillermo del Torror, “The Shape of Water’

DARK HORSE: Christopher Nolan, “Dunkirk”

Best Screenplay – Motion Picture:

Guillermo Del Toro, Vanessa Taylor, “The Shape of Water”

Greta Gerwig, “Lady Bird”

Liz Hannah, Josh Singer, “The Post”

Martin McDonagh, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

Aaron Sorkin, “Molly’s Game”

WILL WIN:Martin McDonagh, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

SHOULD WIN: Martin McDonagh, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
