MCC Lip Sync Battle The Talk Of The Town This Week
There are few times a professor will be asking for students or other faculty to “mouth off” to him, but Muscatine Community College teacher Chad Bishop is calling out to folks to make that happen as a part of the MCC Mouth OFF.
The Mouth OFF is a televised Lip Sync Battle and Bishop is hoping he’ll round up people with enough cheek to use their cheeks to bring the hot air to make him seem like he’s full of hot air in regard to bragging about his lip synching skills. It’s being taped at 3:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Dec. 8 and 9, at the TV production studios at Larson Hall on the MCC campus.
Bishop will be facing off against students and faculty members. The taping is open to the public and the public is encouraged to attend and help judge the competition.
“As part of our TV production final project we always do a TV show,” Bishop said. “This year the kids suggested a lip sync off. They showed me a bunch of clips of lip sync battles on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show and on YouTube and it seemed like a lot of fun. It reminded me of the old lip sync shows in the ‘80s like Puttin’ on the Hits where they would do the same thing. Apparently, that’s what’s hot again. It’s like a trend that’s come full circle. We decided it would be a cool project to do, so we’re doing it.”
Not sure what they’re talking about? Here are some links showing examples of a lip sync battle: https://youtu.be/saOHKFWW3tU and https://youtu.be/LdfMKnJ1y2o.
“We’re hoping to have a lot of people show up, that way the audience can help judge the competition,” Bishop said. “It’s first and foremost a class project, so this is a learning process for the students involved. But we want to make it just like a live TV show with a live audience.”
The battlers will face off through a couple of rounds, lip synching to popular songs, while doing routines that involve choreography and costumes. Each show is slated to run 30-40 minutes.
“It’s one of the better semesters we’ve had here and one of the best ideas,” Bishop said. “It’s going to work even if it doesn’t work. It’s going to be a lot of fun because even if someone messes up it’s still going to be hilarious.”
Even if you’re not able to go to the live taping, Muscatine residents will be able to check out the laughs on channel 9, as once the show’s in the can it’ll be getting a few airings on the tube.
“I think it’s going to be a lot of fun for everyone involved,” Bishop said. “So by all means, we invite people to come out and attend.”
