Harlem Quartet In Town Performing With Quad City Arts
Harlem Quartet, the fourth visiting artist in the 2019-2020 season, will bring their musical talents and educational outreach to the Quad Cities Oct. 21-25.
The New York-based quartet, currently serving a three-year residency at London’s Royal College of Music, will visit 11 schools and community sites during their week of outreach work.
The quartet has been praised for its “panache” by The New York Times and hailed in the Cincinnati Enquirer for “bringing a new attitude to classical music, one that is fresh, bracing and intelligent.” The ensemble has also won plaudits from such veteran musicians as GRAMMY-winning woodwind virtuoso Ted Nash of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, who declared in a May 2018 Playbill article, “Harlem Quartet is one of the greatest string quartets I have ever heard. They can play anything.”
The quartet’s mission is to advance diversity in classical music, engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire that includes works by minority composers. Passion for this work has made the quartet a leading ensemble in both educational and community engagement activities.
Their full-length public concert will be 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at Trinity Anglican Church, Rock Island. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students, children, and the military. Tickets are available at www.quadcityarts.com/vas or at the door.
The 2019-2020 Visiting Artist Series brings 14 artists and ensembles, including a hip-hop dance ensemble, an electronic music producer, a Mexican folk-rock group, and string quartets, to visit the Quad Cities region from September 2019 through April 2020.
