Danelle Kvapil Brings Tunes To Tuneful Tuesday
The February 4 Tuneful Tuesday performance at the Rock Island Public Library features classical saxophone by Danelle Kvapil, of Davenport. The free performance starts at noon in the Rock Island Downtown Library Community Room, 401 19th Street.
With accompaniment by pianist Jody Johnston-Mohr, Kvapil’s program features works by classical composers and arrangers Henri Eccles, George Frideric Handel, Sigurd Rascher, Jules Massenet, Ronald Binge, and Carl Anton Wirth, as well the hymn Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy and a polka arrangement, The Wild Rose, by H.A. VanderCook.
Kvapil studied saxophone under Dr. Joseph Messenger at Iowa State University while earning her bachelor’s degree in Journalism as a music minor. While she performs in various styles, including jazz and Big Band, her heart and strength is firmly in the classical genre. She performs with the Quad City Wind Ensemble, Bettendorf Park Band, Tony Hamilton Orchestra, “Party of Four” and “Concept” saxophone quartets. She has also organized two annual events, Quad Cities Saxophone Christmas and Stars, Stripes and Saxophones,” that bring together saxophonists of all levels to rehearse and perform together. The 2019 Saxophone Christmas attracted 82 saxophonists. She is the Legal Services Manager for Lee Enterprises, and lives in Davenport.
Tuneful Tuesdays is the Rock Island Public Library’s ongoing live music series, featuring free performances from noon to 1:00 pm on the first Tuesday of every month. Events are open to all ages, and attendees may bring a lunch to enjoy while listening to the music. The series is made possible by a gift from Carol and James Horstmann to the Rock Island Public Library Foundation, a 501c3 foundation dedicated to supporting special Rock Island Public Library projects.
March and April performances include:
March 3: Blackhawk Pipes and Drums of the Quad Cities, performing a variety of traditional tunes, just in time for both St. Patrick’s Day in March and Tartan Day in April.
April 7: Macomb-area singer, songwriter, and roots musician Chris Vallillo, performing “Parallel Paths,” a program of poetry by Carl Sandburg with songs by Vallillo. The final performance in the series is also supported by the Louise McCarty Memorial Fund.
All are open to the public.
