Bandwagon’s Behind The Music Schtick Is A Big Hit
By Amanda Jo Payne
Excitement Fills the room as the lights dim. The referee takes the stage and another round of Comedy Sportz kicks off an amazing evening of improv genius at The Establishment Theatre located in the District of Rock Island, IL. These shows are rated “E” for everyone. But after each Friday and Saturday night show, they present an adult performance that shares the same audience interaction and guaranteed laughter.
The Bandwagon is a show where the actors have instruments that they actually play to create their made-up tunes. Audience involvement is a key point to improv, improvised and in-the-moment acting. This team is very talented and adaptive to every idea that comes from the audience. This is great news because the audience is who makes up the name of the band and their song titles as well. The actors then go through stories about each member and some of their background. This all incredible improvisation and is very entertaining to watch.
The performance was hilarious! Suggestions were taken in to be used for naming the band members and then the fun began. The people shouted out their suggestions and the Molly Roses was born. When they started jamming their first tune, I knew this was going to be awesome. They rocked! Not only were they quick with making up lyrics, but they had incredible voices and I was blown away. I caught myself singing along with them continuously throughout the show.
The music itself was daring and funny. But the skits that they created off the top of their heads were amusing and creative. As the shows after Comedy Sportz are for adult audiences only, I will not give certain details. But let’s just say that the names chosen were definitely adults only!
The actors have so much fun working together that one can feel how at ease they blend and create as a team. They are all so gifted at this place that anyone who attends any of their performances will automatically be ready for the next one. I am eager to attend and reattend as long as I am a part of our great Quad-Cities.
When they are on stage, I catch myself genuinely smiling. This smile is not fleeting, but prolonged and strengthened by the realization that I am truly smiling. The Establishment Theatre is a must see for anyone from the QC and a great experience for anyone who is just visiting here.
