Día De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Events Set at Western Illinois University Tonight

Casa Latina and the Día De Los Muertos Committee at Western Illinois University will host two “Día De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead)” events at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30 in the Multicultural Center. Each event is limited to 25 members of the University community Día De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Events Set at Western Illinois University Tonightonly (students, faculty and staff); pre-registration is required and may be completed on the Purple Post site.

Día De Los Muertos is a celebration of LatinX culture that originated thousands of years ago thanks to the Aztec, Toltec and other Nahua people, and is a time to uplift the spirits and memories of loved ones as the living are temporarily reunited with the dead.

“Día De Los Muertos has always been a holiday to feel closer to where and who I’ve come from. In the process of remembering those that came before me, I find a deeper connection between myself and my culture,” said Michelle Narvaez. “For me, Día De Los Muertos is the perfect holiday for bittersweet moments, dulce indulgence, and colorful celebration that reminds us to have gratitude for family and the opportunity to create lasting memories.”

Activities at the events include a folklorico performance, catrin contest, sugar skull painting, loteria, catrin face tattoos and more. The events will also celebrate the Día De Los Muertos tradition by having an altar to honor those who have passed.

“Día De Los Muertos is a time to celebrate the lives of our loved ones which have passed to the afterlife. By remembering their stories, jokes, and favorite meals we are able to keep them in our hearts, a place where they will never be forgotten,” added Eiran Saucedo-Rodarte
