Davenport Doctor John Hartman Appointed Chair of State ACS Committee On Trauma
Genesis Health Group, Davenport Surgical’s K. John Hartman, M.D., FACS, has been appointed chair of the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) for the State of Iowa.
The mission of the American College of Surgeons Committees on Trauma is to develop and implement programs that support injury prevention and ensure optimal patient outcomes across the continuum of care. These programs incorporate advocacy, education, trauma center and trauma system resources, best practice creation, outcome assessment, and continuous quality improvement.
Dr. Hartman, who is the medical director of the Genesis Trauma program, will serve a 3-year term of office running through March 2024. His appointment to the voluntary position comes on the recommendations of Dionne Skeete, M.D., FACS, immediate past chair of the Iowa Committee on Trauma, and Patrick Reilly, M.D., FACS, chair of the ACS’s 17 Regional Committees on Trauma. Iowa is part of Region 7, which also includes, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.
State committees on trauma traditionally consider issues relating to all aspects of trauma surgery, from pre-hospital and emergency department, to operating theater, intensive care and rehabilitation. The scope of these components includes patient care, education and research.

the opportunity to serve the state in this capacity and work with trauma leadership to ensure injured patients receive optimal care and achieve excellent outcomes regardless of where they enter the trauma system.”
Hartman, a native of Boone, Iowa, served as general surgeon and a Commander in the Navy Reserves. In 2008, he was deployed to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany, the largest United States military hospital outside the continental U.S., where he cared for combat casualties from war-torn Iraq and Afghanistan.
Dr. Hartman holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, and earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He completed surgical internships at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis., and is a Fellow, American College of Surgeons. Other professional memberships include American Medical Association, Iowa Medical Society, Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma and American Society of Breast Surgeons.
He is co-director of the GMC-East Rusholme Street ICU and Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Hartman serves on the board of directors of Medic EMS and MedForce Aeromedical Transport, sits on the ACS Rural Trauma Committee, and is a member of the ACS Disaster Management Emergency Preparedness Work Group.
