Danielle Ate The Sandwich Charms Colonastock

When you think of Colona, you think of . . . well, you don’t think of perfectly charming, creative and quirky concerts featuring indie folk pop darlings.

But, Jessica and Tristan Tapscott, the founders of Colonastock, are known for thinking out of the box, so, there you go. Colonastock. Part Woodstock, part little indie show in a barn on a hayrack, part something that’s rarely if ever been done before, all offbeat fun.

Colonastock, which, truth be told, was also sponsored by your beloved QuadCities.com, got off to a rousing start in its inaugural year with a brilliant and bouncy show on Wednesday, August 16. A packed barn of folks of all ages showed up to be enchanted by the tunes of Oh Darling (playing their first “real” gig), local alt-rock critics’ darling Lewis Knudsen and headliner Danielle Ate The Sandwich.

Danielle, aka Danielle Anderson to her friends and family, aka Miss Jackson if you’re nasty, was iridescent and charming, strumming off singalong tunes, engaging the crowd in low key amusing banter and leading singalongs of her romantic, heartfelt tracks.

“It was awesome to be a part of this,” she said, after the show. “It really feels intimate, to be in this setting, and the crowd was great. I’d heard so many great things about Tristan and Jessica and it was so cool to be a part of this.”

Anderson sandwiched in the show during her latest tour, which sees her make 12 stops in three weeks before heading back to her native Fort Collins, Colorado, home.

“I’m always excited to get out and play and do my songs in front of a live crowd,” she said. “So many of the things I do are online so it’s nice to get out and play in front of real people in real life.”

And, having a real life reporter in front of her to ask questions (Thanks Geppetto!!!) I just had to ask about the name of her band. What exactly does it mean, and why did Danielle eat the sandwich?

“Actually it’s kind of a boring story,” she said, throwing a wet blanket upon my enthusiasm (Thanks Danielle!!!) “We were putting up a MySpace page and needed a name for the band, and, well, I like food a lot, and I thought a sandwich would be a good food to include in the name of the band.”

Ok, yeah, that is kind of a boring story. But we really know that it’s all a front for Danielle being a secret CIA superspy. Right Danielle?

Er, no comment.

Anyway, one thing she did comment on was her favorite sandwich. After all, if she loves those damn sandwiches so much to name her band out of them surely she’s got to have one she feels especially passionate about, right?

Right.

“Actually grilled cheese is my favorite sandwich,” she said. “I like the classics.”

So do we, Danielle, so do we. We’ll bring the tomato soup too next time.
