Celebrate Black History Month Events
Western Illinois University will celebrate Black History Month throughout February, with a variety of activities, speakers and events planned.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the events vary from virtual to in person.
The Black History Month schedule for the remainder of the month includes:
• Tuesday, Feb. 16 – 3-6 p.m. – The BSA presents Gwendolyn’s Give-A-Way: The BSA will distribute free books at the Multicultural Center in celebration of Black authors. Books are available until 6 p.m., or until the supply runs out.
• Friday, Feb. 19 – 6 p.m. – movie night, “Moonlight,” virtual event: The LGBT*QA Resource Center and Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center will celebrate Black History Month with a free, online movie night. The film is a powerful and inspiring coming of age drama of a young Black man growing up in Miami. • Saturday, Feb. 20 – 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – Second annual Men of Color Regional Retreat – virtual event: The retreat will feature special guest facilitator Bryant K. Smith, the creator of thought-provoking and award-winning experiential learning programs. He has witnessed the power of diversity in the boardroom, classroom and the court of competition, and is dedicated to helping participants reframe their views on difference, communication and male development. The event is sponsored by the Bradley University Office of Diversity & Inclusion, Cornell College of Intercultural Life, Monmouth College Intercultural Life and the WIU Multicultural Center. Registration is free to all students and the deadline to register is 10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18.
• Monday, Feb. 22 – 5-6:30 p.m., Beauty and the Beast: Black History Edition, virtual event: The interactive workshop and performance is sponsored by the Black Greek Poets and will explore the dualities of Blackness, as it pertains to Black movements, Hip Hop and cuisine. • Wednesday, Feb. 24 – 5-6:30 p.m. – “We Got Us,” a leadership workshop: This event is presented by The Underrep’d, an organization for Black college students who attend Predominantly White Institutions. Success tips will be offered and the event is open free to the public. The event can be joined at wiu.zoom.us/j/96061983704. • Thursday, Feb. 25 – 7-8 p.m. – “The Get Down,” Zoom party: This event is hosted by the Casa Latina Cultural Center and the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center to celebrate Black History Month. “The Get Down” is an event where Black history is celebrated through music. Music all across Latin America has strong influences from Black Culture, and it is important to recognize the influence of the culture as it may not be evident through the appearances of prominent artists. This program will examine Lincoln’s statesmanship in the context of longstanding and widespread racial bigotry against black Americans. It will explore how Lincoln attempted to inform public opinion regarding the natural rights of black Americans by reclaiming the central idea of the American regime—namely, human equality. Lincoln’s efforts to re-establish equality as the lodestar of the nation’s political practice will be contrasted with the policy of “popular sovereignty” as it was promoted by his long-time rival Sen. Stephen A. Douglas, the leading Democrat and therefore the leading American politician of the 1850s.

Harriet Beecher Stowe Film Debuting This Week
Harriet Beecher Stowe was a small, quiet woman who wielded a towering, thunderous literary voice that helped change the conscience and course of a nation.

Barely five feet tall, Stowe (1811-1896) is just 23 in the award-winning docudrama “Sons & Daughters of Thunder (2019) by Moline-based filmmakers Kelly and Tammy Rundle of Fourth Wall Films.
A half-hour companion documentary, “Becoming Harriet Beecher Stowe,” premiered last February on WQPT-PBS, and will be presented online by the Bettendorf Public Library on Thursday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m., in honor of Black History Month.
A Q&A with the film producers and Christina Hartlieb (executive director of the Harriet Beecher Stowe House in Cincinnati, Ohio) will follow the film via Fourth Wall Films’ Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Fourth-Wall-Films-173844695995934.
Becoming Harriet Beecher Stowe tells the little-known story of the famous writer’s life in Cincinnati, and how those life-changing experiences contributed to her best-selling novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” (1852). Stowe lived in Cincinnati between 1832 and 1850, and just after her move to Maine, she adapted her moving observations and anti-slavery sentiment into America’s most influential novel.

The Bureau of Cultural Affairs (BCA) at Western Illinois University will offer a series of five free, virtual shows for the Spring 2021 semester as part of “On the Couch – Virtual Arts Series.”
The production company, BiCoastal Productions, is offering free shows to presenters like BCA during the COVID-19 pandemic to continue to offer exposure to the arts to audiences. Each show begins at 7 p.m. on a series of Wednesdays.
The schedule includes:
• Feb. 17 – “Married to Broadway,” starring the Sharpe Family Singers – The real married stars of “Les Miserables,” Ron and Barbara Sharpe, first met on stage on Broadway playing the romantic lead roles of Marius and Cosette.
Now, with two grown children; a pair of identical twin boys, and three “adopted” family members (the boyfriend, the best friend and the lovable uncle) this group has formed The Sharpe Family Singers to bring their love of Broadway to stages across America.
In “Married to Broadway,” The Sharpe Family Singers share their love of Broadway musicals by performing the big, showstopping numbers that are audience favorites around the world. Their repertoire includes songs from new hit Broadway shows like “Hamilton” and “Dear Evan Hansen,” blockbuster movies like “The Greatest Showman,” hits from Disney On Broadway and Broadway’s Rock & Roll musicals as well as classic show tunes from “Phantom,” “Cats,” “Evita,” “Guys and Dolls,” “West Side Story,” “Carousel,” “Fiddler,” “Les Miserables” and more.
• Feb. 24 – The Silhouettes® – America’s Got Talent: The Champions! was founded in 2009, and was the first runner-up on “America’s Got Talent” season six in 2011, and Golden Buzzer winners on America’s Got Talent – The Champions in 2020.
The premiere shadow-dance company was created and directed by Lynne Waggoner-Patton. The company trains, films and performs its live shows, including “LOVE Happens,” “Heroes Tribute,” “For the Child,” “The Gift,” “Behind the Curtain” and “Shadowspook” at its theatre in Westminster, CO.
The Silhouettes® have been featured in television commercials and various other television shows, as well as in customized corporate events for major Fortune 500 companies. They have traveled the world from Ireland to Poland to Mexico and Canada and recently completed a four-month tour of Germany in 73 theatres, receiving standing ovations and outstanding reviews.
